Harry Potter has a very special place in our hearts here at Retro Styler, and once you're done with this run down of our favourite quotes from the franchise, you'll be falling in love with the films, reaching for and dusting off the cobwebs from the first movie's DVD which has been wedged at the back of your collection (how old school...) or hitting play on your chosen streaming service!

Harry, Hermione and Ron taught us about love, acceptance, bravery, life, death and true friendship as we followed them on the most magical (and sometimes genuinely terrifying!) adventures through their teenage years through to young adulthood. 

We hope you finish this piece feeling armed and ready to be courageous in the face of adversity, whilst also reminding you that love and friendship truly are two of the most treasured possessions we can own.

"It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live..."

The legend that is Albus Dumbledore hit us with this one in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and it's definitely a quote we can all use on a day-to-day basis. With the pressures that come with modern life, and with social media's popularity showing no signs of slowing down, the temptation to compare our lives to that of others has never been higher. 

Constantly wishing for more, more, more, whether that be in your work or personal life, can leave you in a state where you are constantly striving for that next step, whilst simultaneously failing to appreciate how far you have already come and truly living in the present.

"Fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself..."

A classic from Hermione, this quote really resonates with me on so many levels! Granger's words of wisdom remind me to keep myself grounded, and tackle things that may seem a bit scary at first glance head on, even if you do feel slightly overwhelmed in the beginning. 

As humans/ muggles (and not Witches and Wizards like Harry and the gang), we have a tendency to over-complicate SO many situations in our heads, I know this is something I am definitely guilty of. Whether it be a huge essay at Uni or school you have no idea on how to even start, or there's a particular room in your house which might have become a bit of a dumping ground you need to sort out, the best way to get over that initial fear is to just go for it, dive in - head first!

"Don’t let the muggles get you down."

One of my all-time favourite fictional characters, Ron, enlightened us with this beauty in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. 

As I have said before, it can be so easy to let others, and how we continuously compare ourselves to others, get us down. BUT, it really doesn't have to be that way. 

We all have a choice on how we feel and how we react, so next time you're scrolling through Instagram and see sassy Susan enjoying yet another freebie cocktail in some sunny all-inclusive resort across the pond, instead of thinking "great, here I am sat at my desk for yet another 9-5 shift", think "ahh how nice, that's great for her. Maybe one day I'll get some time away, but in the meantime I'm going to boss my own day and get some things ticked off my to-do list!" 

"If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." 

Sirius Black showed his loyalty to the Potter family throughout his appearance in the franchise and we were first introduced to the character in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. 

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Black dropped this bomb and it continues to resonate with me. 

In every aspect of our lives, this quote is applicable and one we should all remember. Whether it be in work, with your friends, your family, you can always see a person's true worth on how they judge and also treat anybody they believe to be "below" them. 

It's definitely something to bear in mind whilst you're interacting with other people as well...

"Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect."

Luna Lovegood had many pearls of wisdom whilst she was present in the franchise, and this quote  from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is up there with one of my favourites. 

We can get into the habit of viewing loss as a really negative thing, but in actual fact a loss can usually mean that something new (and sometimes better...) is on its way to you, it just depends on how you perceive it. 

Although it is never easy to lose anything, like your job or a close family or friend, always be grateful for that experience and person and ensure you remember and take any lessons you learnt forward with you, ready for your next chapter. 

I am a firm believer that good things do have a way of finding us, it just might not be as quickly as you want...

"'The thing about growing up with Fred and George is that you sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve.'" 

Any guesses on which character's lips this quote passed? Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince of course! 

The Weasley twins gave us so many giggles and lovely, light-hearted moments through the series, although their courage and nerve wasn't something they took as lightly! 

This quote resonates with me so much, and I think we can forget just how tough and resilient we actually are. 

Sometimes you have to just grit your teeth and repeat to yourself "I can do tough things!"

"I solemnly swear I am up to no good."

I couldn't write this blog post without including this one! 

With the main man himself, Harry Potter, coming out with this one in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. This quote famously transformed a blank piece of parchment paper into the iconic Marauders Map. 

Acting as a lasting testimony to the advanced magical ability of James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew (with a little help from Potter's invisibility cloak), the map was devised as the four friends explored the castle grounds at night, whilst remaining completely undetected. 

When Harry discovers the map and the secrets it holds, it is such a heart-warming moment as he feels connected to his father's legacy like never before.

"It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be."

The old and incredibly wise Dumbledore strikes again with this quote in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. 

This one does speak for itself, but you really are capable of anything when you put your mind to it, and this quote reiterates that no matter how you start off in life, you should remember to push your limits and reach for the stars - the sky is genuinely the limit!

"I am what I am, an' I'm not ashamed. 'Never be ashamed,' my ol' dad used ter say, 'there's some who'll hold it against you, but they're not worth botherin' with.'"

Okay... Now the quote is out there, don't even try and begin to tell me you didn't read that in Hagrid's accent?! 

Hagrid is one of my favourite characters in the series (trumping Ron!) and the half-human, half-giant is there for you when you need a little lift with this pearl of wisdom which graced our ears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. We are all a little different and we should all be celebrating that, not shying away from it! 

Imagine if we were all the same... How boring!?

"Dobby is free."

*Wipes tears away from eyes*

Now, everyone who has watched the Harry Potter franchise remembers Dobby the house elf who was horrendously mistreated by the Malfoy family. 

Dobby was one who constantly put himself in front of others, remember - he was happy to die to protect Harry Potter. 

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry manages to free Dobby by handing Tom Riddle's diary back to Lucius Malfoy, which contained an old sock, which Malfoy then tosses in Dobby's direction - mistakenly setting the house elf free. 

The delight which Dobby wears across his face is just so heart-warming, knowing he will never be treated as cruelly as he was at the hands of the Malfoy's!
